Dramatic Video Shows Moment Car Hits Spike Strips During High Speed Chase in Lafayette
A high-speed chase in Lafayette ended in dramatic fashion after a car ran over spike strips while running from authorities.
We received numerous tips that a high-speed chase was in progress around 1 p.m. as many began to post about the incident on social media.
The dramatic moment when the fleeing vehicle hit the strategically-placed spike strips was captured on video by employees at Motor City at the corner of University and Willow Street.
Cory Schlabach at Motor City told me that employees were outside because it was actually the second time the car was passing by their dealership as police set up a perimeter that eventually had the suspect going in circles.
The danger associated with a high-speed chase is obvious enough, but with vehicles parked near the road at their 1111 N. University location, having a suspect zoom by twice looking to escape police by any means necessary was way too close for comfort.
Duson Police Chief Kip Judice told our media partners at KATC that the high-speed chase started in Duson after officers located a stolen vehicle from Crowley on Wednesday afternoon.
At that point, Duson police initiated a traffic stop on the stolen vehicle off the Scott exit. The vehicle did stop briefly but then took off again.
According to LPSO Public Information Officer Valerie Ponseti, Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies assisted Duson Police in a chase that lasted about 10 minutes before spike strips were deployed. The vehicle was ultimately stopped at University and Willow where officers located a "large amount of narcotics" in the vehicle.
LPSO narcotics agents are currently assisting Duson Police in the investigation as one person was reportedly taken into custody.
We've reached out to law enforcement for more details on this incident and will continually update this story when that information is made available.
