Louisiana Driver Identified in Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash in Iberia Parish
A single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of a local man in Iberia Parish on Monday morning (Feb. 26). Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to the scene on Louisiana Highway 31 near Greenbriar Street, following reports of the accident that occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m.
The victim has been identified as 73-year-old Leroy Lewis of New Iberia. According to the initial investigation, Lewis was behind the wheel of a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado, traveling southbound on LA 31. Under circumstances that are still being investigated, Lewis's vehicle veered off the roadway to the right, subsequently entering a ditch and colliding with a tree.
Despite the fact that Lewis was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, his sustained injuries were fatal. The Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene. The question of impairment as a factor in the crash is currently under investigation, with a toxicology sample having been taken for analysis.
This incident marks the fifth fatal crash investigated by Troop I in 2024. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, as authorities work to determine the exact cause and any contributing factors.
