Ozempic is a prescription drug that has generated significant attention recently, not only for its primary purpose of managing blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes but also for its potential to aid in weight loss.

There has been controversy around people taking this drug to lose weight because the FDA has not approved it as a standalone weight loss medication.

In addition, many are concerned about the potential long-term side effects especially now that they are changing their warning label to reflect a major side effect users are suffering from after taking Ozempic.

Possible Side Effects of Taking Ozempic Already Listed

As with any medication, Ozempic is associated with potential side effects. Common side effects include:

1. Nausea

2. Vomiting

3. Diarrhea

4. Abdominal pain

5. Headache

6. Fatigue

New Side Effect Added to label

The Food and Drug Administration has officially updated the label for the diabetes drug to include blocked intestines as a potential side effect. Similar drugs Wegovy and Mounjaro already have this listed as a potential side effect.

While the majority of gastrointestinal side effects from drugs like Ozempic are moderate in severity and typically don't last long, there have been reports of serious reactions. Anaphylaxis and angioedema are real concerns. The FDA recommends that anyone who suspects that they may be having a serious hypersensitivity reaction stop use immediately.

Why Ozempic is being prescribed for weight loss

The drug suppresses your appetite which means people who take Ozempic are eating less throughout the day. Patients who added the drug to their weight loss regimen have reported weight loss when combined with exercise and a healthy diet. Some suggest that taking Ozempic can improve your metabolism leading to more fat-burning and as a result, more weight loss.

If you have questions, concerns, or are considering taking Ozempic talk with your provider about the potential side effects and if it would the right choice for you.
