The Recall Announcement

More than two dozen candy lines are being pulled from shelves over fears they might be contaminated with salmonella. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued the recall for a bunch of sweet snacks, including caramel pretzels and cookies. These goodies were shipped nationwide to big stores like Walmart, Hy-Vee, Dollar General, and Target. If you live in New Mexico, Texas, or Arizona, you definitely want to check your pantry.

Salmonella is a pretty common cause of food poisoning, bringing on symptoms like diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people recover in about a week, but it can be dangerous for older folks and those with weaker immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Initial Concerns and Expansion

The first warning came in early May when Hy-Vee voluntarily recalled its "To Go Cookies & Cream Mix" and "Whipped Cream Cheese Spread" due to potential contamination from an unnamed third-party manufacturer. This recall got serious last week when the FDA labeled it a "Class I" health risk, meaning these products could cause serious health issues or even death. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported so far, but this was just the tip of the iceberg.

Newsweek reported that this was part of a bigger issue involving the Palmer Candy Company. The FDA found out that over 30 items sold by major retailers could be contaminated. This affects multiple states, including New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona, so residents need to be extra careful and return any affected products.

Affected Products and Actions to Take

Palmer Candy Company got the heads-up about the contamination from their liquid coating supplier, who discovered a potentially contaminated ingredient. Production of these products has been paused while the FDA and the company investigate the source of the problem. The FDA has listed all the affected products and their best-by dates.

If you bought any of these items, take them back to the store for a full refund. Here’s the full list of recalled products:
