Jindal Delays Signing Bill To Kill Anti-oil Suit
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed to delay signing a bill aimed at killing a lawsuit filed by a southeast Louisiana levee board against 97 oil and gas companies.
Jindal said Monday he agreed to postpone at the request of the state attorney general, who wanted time to review the measure.
An analysis by legal scholars raises questions of whether the measure might affect lawsuits against BP over the 2010 oil spill.
The suit against 97 companies was filed last year and is now in federal court. Supporters say the industry hasn't been held sufficiently accountable for damage done by dredging in wetlands that protect New Orleans from hurricanes.
Jindal and other opponents say the suit is an attack on a valuable industry and a windfall for trial lawyers.
