This week, the Federal Court for the Western District of Louisiana ruled that a lawsuit brought by the Attorneys General for Louisiana and Missouri can move to its next phase.
Both Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt have filed against the highest levels of the Biden Administration, as well as social media companies. They allege First Amendment violations, Actions in Excess of Statutory Authority, and violations of the Administrative Procedure Act by multiple government departments.
The specific targets of the lawsuit include President Joe Biden, former Press Secretary Jen Psaki, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the now-defunct Department of Homeland Security’s “Disinformation Governance Board” Nina Jankowicz, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and social media giants Meta, Twitter, and Youtube.
This all surrounds the suppression of dialog about the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The ruling this week says that the Biden Administration and social media companies must turn over documentation, and potentially answer questions, related to the accusations in the case.
What are those specific accusations? A release from Missouri's Attorney General outlines the accusations, saying Government officials:
"...pressured and colluded with social media giants Meta, Twitter, and Youtube to censor free speech in the name of combating so-called “disinformation” and “misinformation,” which led to the suppression and censorship of truthful information on several topics, including COVID-19."
The accusations of collusion surrounding the COVID-19 Pandemic have been around almost as long as the pandemic. With some major pieces of evidence being revealed through media reports. Including emails obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests that show high level officials shutting down conversations through their contacts. Actions like this are what the lawsuit being brought by Louisiana and Missouri are centered around.
