LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — School officials say a Lafayette Parish bus driver under investigation for allegedly driving drunk following an accident last week has resigned from his job.

The Advocate reports 50-year-old John Harvey Bernard was suspended with pay Thursday pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident. His resignation was effective Monday.

School officials say Bernard ran off the road and into a ditch while transporting 11 students to Katharine Drexel Elementary School.

Bernard initially told sheriff's deputies who responded to the scene of the crash that he ran off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle. However, investigators say Bernard provided false information.

He was cited for careless operation of a vehicle and results of a blood sample he submitted to determine blood alcohol content are pending.
