Cattlemen in the Lafourche Parish area are looking to return the favor to their north Louisiana peers who sent bales of hay to them following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike and a severe rain flood in Lafourche last December.

On Thursday, the bales were loaded onto state Agriculture Department trucks at the LSU AgCenter in Raceland for distribution to ranchers in Monroe and Shreveport.

Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain told The Courier that a long drought and hay shortage in north Louisiana has made for a difficult winter for cattle ranchers there.

Bob Pitre, vice president of the Lafourche Cattleman's Association, donated 100 bales of hay worth $50 to $100 apiece to aid them. Gary Gisclair, of Double G Farms in Cut Off, donated 22 bales.
