ADDIS, La. (AP) — The mayor of a West Baton Rouge Parish town is stepping down after 32 consecutive years in office.

The Advocate reports that Addis Mayor Carroll Bourgeois decided to retire and spend more time with his family rather than seek a ninth term.

The 69-year-old was first elected mayor of Addis in 1980. It has grown from a village to a town of more than 3,500 residents during his tenure.

Mayor-elect David Toups will take office Tuesday. He was elected without opposition in November.
