Louisiana 'truth in labeling' proposal nears final passage

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A protectionist measure for farmers that would make it unlawful for food manufacturers to market products such as cauliflower rice if there's no rice in it is nearing final passage.

A divided House voted 58-29 Monday for the so-called "truth in labeling" proposal adding protections for what products can be called meat, seafood, rice and sugar. Products couldn't be labeled "veggie meat patties" if they don't contain meat, for example.

Supporters say they're protecting consumers from misleading labels and farmers who have spent millions to brand their products.

Opponents say they don't think consumers are confused and they worry such a law will limit the products available in Louisiana.

The Senate must review House language changes before the bill can reach the governor's desk.
