LPSS Maintains “B” Letter Grade

Lafayette Parish School System 2018-2019 School Performance Scores Today’s release of statewide school and district accountability results indicates the Lafayette Parish School System has maintained its B letter grade. The combined district performance score shows a slight overall gain of 0.3 points.

The three measures of performance, which include the K-8 Assessment Index, the Dropout Credit Accumulation Index, and Progress Index, improved overall.

Interim Superintendent Irma Trosclair said, “The Lafayette Parish School System continues to improve. Congratulations to school leaders, staff, and students that are being recognized by the Louisiana Department of Education as Top Gains and Equity Honorees. We are also excited that all LPSS traditional K-12 schools earned an “A” or “B” student progress index score. This demonstrates that effective teaching and learning is taking place in schools across our district. Moving forward, district staff have identified specific areas for growth at each individual school and are working closely with school leaders and teachers in supporting continued improvement in the 2019-2020 school year.”

Nine traditional Lafayette Parish schools improved their School Performance Score (SPS) by one letter grade.

The most substantial improvements were earned at:

• Westside Elementary School (11.6 points),
• Ernest Gallet Elementary School (8.1 points),
• Lafayette Middle School (7.5 points).

Principal Lisa Thomas had the following to say about school growth, “At Westside Elementary School, we are ecstatic, overjoyed, and thrilled about our school-wide growth and academic performance for the 18-19 school year. Special thanks to our teachers and staff for their hard work and commitment to student learning and academic excellence. We are so proud of our students for their academic focus and excellent performance on statewide assessments. Our parents have been extremely supportive in our efforts to improve student growth and development. We are truly grateful that our goal of academic success has finally been achieved and will continue to strive for greatness.”

Tia Trahan, principal of Lafayette Middle School said, “Our growth speaks to the hard work and dedication of my amazing faculty, staff, and students as well as the level of support we received from the district. Together we all synergized to make individual student growth a priority. We believed they could and they did! ”

Both N. P. Moss Preparatory Academy (newly named LeRosen Preparatory School beginning in the 2019-2020 school year) and Edward J. Sam Accelerated School of Lafayette scored substantially higher under the new system compared to the old system. N. P. Moss Preparatory Academy moved up two letter grades, while Edward J. Sam Accelerated School of Lafayette improved more than ten points.

Principal of LeRosen Preparatory School, Ms. Renee White, had the following to say, “The state established a new scale for alternative schools. Our school's score is 63.1, which is 31.2 points higher than last school year. We attribute this growth to all of the hard work and dedication of the phenomenal faculty and staff of LeRosen Preparatory. We have worked profusely to implement Tier 1 curriculum with fidelity and also work to encourage students to be their best every day!”

Twenty-five traditional public schools in Lafayette Parish showed improvement on their 2019 School Performance Scores compared to 2018.

Ossun Elementary School and Ernest Gallet Elementary School improved by a letter grade.

Principal, Kelli Clause attributed SPS gains to “A committed, focused staff who consistently provided all students opportunities to master standards through rigorous instruction and assessments. Students worked hard to meet and exceed the high expectations that were set, trusting that the expectations were attainable. We are so proud of our students and staff for working so hard to achieve these goals.”

Principal Monique Chargois of Ernest Gallet Elementary School says, “Our School has cultivated an academically rich environment by maintaining a vision inclusive of setting high expectations and nurturing a love of reading in all students. Not only do teachers strategically analyze data to identify strengths and weaknesses of their students, they also differentiate their instructional practices to meet the diverse needs of their students. I am extremely proud of the teachers and students for their commitment to academic excellence!”

Early College Academy, recently recognized as a 2019 Exemplary High Performing Schools National Blue Ribbon School, maintained the highest overall School Performance Score at 131.9.

Lafayette Parish also saw improvement in Transformation Zone Schools with 57 percent of identified Transformation Zone schools demonstrating growth over the previous year.

“It is a very exciting day for Judice Middle School! Our 6.6 growth over last year proves that our faculty, staff, and students worked extremely hard and full credit for this growth goes to them. Ms. Boxie and I are so proud! Go Cardinals!” said Sonjie Fontenot, principal.

The Louisiana Department of Education released Early Childhood Performance Profiles for all publicly funded Early Childhood Providers. Twenty-one campuses in our district have a pre-k classroom and receive a Performance Profile, along with Nonpublic School Early Childhood Development (NSECD), Head Start, Early Head Start and Type III Centers in the Lafayette Parish Network.

As a whole, the Lafayette Parish network achieved a High Proficient rating increasing from 5.22 to 5.28 overall.

The Early Childhood Profiles have a rankings system of Unsatisfactory (1.00 – 2.99), Approaching Proficient (3.00 – 3.74), Proficient (3.75 – 4.49), High Proficient (4.50 – 5.99) and Excellent (6.00 – 7.00).

Throughout the state there are one hundred and eleven sites scoring excellent.

The Lafayette Parish Network has nine excellent sites. These include seven Lafayette Parish School System elementary sites:

• Broadmoor Elementary School,
• Carencro Heights Elementary School,
• Charles M. Burke Elementary School, Ernest Gallet Elementary School,
• J. Wallace James Elementary School,
• S.J. Montgomery Elementary School,
• Woodvale Elementary School;
• one NSECD site: Holy Family Catholic School;
• one Type III Early Learning Center: Little Oaks Learning Center.

In addition, the Lafayette Parish network has two sites receiving the Top Gains Honor Roll, Sugar N Spice Broussard’s Preschool, Inc. and Rosa’s Infant and Toddler Center.
