Man Dies After Putting Firework on His Head to ‘Show Off’ for Independence Day
A 41-year-old South Carolina man tragically lost his life on July 4th after placing a lit firework on his head in an attempt to "show off," according to his wife. The incident, which occurred during a 4th of July holiday celebration, has left a local community in shock.
The man, identified as Allen Ray McGrew, suffered fatal head injuries when the firework exploded. Dorchester County Coroner Paul Brouthers confirmed that McGrew was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to witnesses and multiple news outlets, including NBC affiliate WCBD and ABC affiliate WCIV, the accident happened in the evening after a block party had concluded. First responders found McGrew lying on the road with severe injuries.
McGrew’s wife, Paige, recounted the tragic details to The Post and Courier. She explained that her husband had been drinking for several hours and was wearing an Uncle Sam costume. He placed the firework on his head in a moment of what she believed to be showboating. Paige noted, "I thought he was just showboating before he set it on the ground. I didn’t realize he had already lit it."
Despite relatives' efforts to stop him, the firework ignited, leading to the fatal explosion. Paige described her husband as a patriot who cherished Independence Day. McGrew, an HVAC worker, was a father to a son who was engaged to be married. "He was proud of his son and excited to have a new daughter-in-law. He was living his best life last night," she added.
Authorities, including the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating the incident. This tragic event is one of four fireworks-related fatalities reported across the country over the July 4th holiday, according to USA Today.
While McGrew’s untimely death is undoubtedly tragic, it also serves as a reminder of the dangers that come with fireworks and why safety is always paramount while handling these dangerous explosives.
