McGlothen Family Lawyer Talks SPD Indictments

James Carter, attorney for the family of the late Tommy McGlothen, talks about the recent indictments of four Shreveport Police officers for negligent homicide in McGlothen's death while in custody last April.

The Caddo Parish District Attorney's Office announced Friday that a Caddo Parish Grand Jury returned indictments against four Shreveport Police Department Officers in connection with the April 5, 2020 death of Tommie Dale McGlothen Jr.

Treona McCarter, Brian Ross, D’Marea Johnson and James LeClare, are charged with Negligent Homicide and Malfeasance in the death of McGlothen, 44, following an incident with a homeowner in the 3700 block of Eileen Lane.

Carter explains what the charge of negligent homicide means. "An officer, under these circumstances, exhibit blatant disregard for human life and to act as a reasonable officer - grossly failed to act as a reasonable peace officer - under the circumstances. That is the situation we have here, resulting in the death of Tommy McGlothen."

"We are hoping it happens as expeditiously as possibly," says Carter, referring to when the trial of the four officers may begin. "Obviously, the family is exasperated - exuberant and exasperated at the same time - they are obviously pleased, in terms of the charges."
