MONROE, La. (AP) — A man holding knives to a woman's neck was shot and killed early Saturday morning by Monroe police.

State Troopers say Detandel Devon Pickens, a 25-year-old Monroe man, was killed.

The shooting capped a series of events involving Pickens, troopers say. Monroe police ordered him to leave a residence around 12:30 a.m. after responding to a call. But Pickens returned and stabbed a man who tried to stop Pickens from assaulting a woman.

Police returned around 2 a.m. to find Pickens holding the knives. Authorities say he refused to drop the blades, and wasn't stopped when police used a Taser on him. Police then shot Pickens, who died at the residence.

Troopers and Monroe police are investigating. The troopers say they will report findings to the Ouachita Parish district attorney.
