NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has announced the members of a new commission that will oversee the city's recreation programs.

Voters recently approved an overhaul of the way the department is governed. Landrieu and the City Council have committed part of a recently approved property tax increase to the department.

Among those serving on the new 13-member commission will be Landrieu himself and Paul Vallas, the superintendent of the state agency that oversees most New Orleans public schools.

Landrieu has touted the improvement of recreational opportunities for the city's young people as a means of helping prevent crime.
