Ragin’ Cajuns Beat Up Georgia Southern For First Conference Win
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns set out on the road on Saturday for their first Sun Belt Conference game of the 2019 season at Georgia Southern. It turned out to be a successful business trip as Louisiana got the victory 37-24 at a ruckus Paulson Stadium.
The player of the game Saturday was Levi Lewis, his stats may not indicate that but if you watched/listened to the game you knew he made key plays at critical times. He finished 11/18 for 165 yards, a touchdown, and no turnovers. He also added four carries for 27 yards and really utilized his scrambling abilities on a 4th and goal from the one-yard line and fired a scoring strike to Ja'Marcus Bradley in the third quarter.
Speaking of guys playing quality games you also had the usual characters with running backs Trey Ragas and Elijah Mitchell.
Ragas was a man among boys running for 131 yards on 16 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns. His running mate Elijah Mitchell carried the ball 14 times for 81 yards and two scores of his own.
The offensive line beat up the Georgia State defensive line early and often in this one which was also a key factor for the Cajuns garnering the victory on Saturday.
In addition, the UL defense played a stellar game containing the triple-option attack from the Eagles as starting quarterback Shai Werts returned to the field after an injury he sustained earlier in the season during the LSU game. He ended up carrying the ball a game-high 21 times for 93 yards and zero scores. He also threw for 37 yards on 6/12 passing.
Coach Billy Napier said after the game that this was one of the most complete games the team has played in his tenure with one caveat, special teams turnovers. On two separate occasions during the first half punt returner, Eric Garror muffed a punt that allowed the Eagles to score 10 points.
One other special team's blunder was when punter Kenneth Almendares got an opportunity to kick an extra point on the final score by Louisiana and missed it. We know Stevie Artigues has had some trouble converting kicks this season, but converted on all his kicks in this one, so that's something to monitor and might be the biggest thing the Cajuns need to worry about moving forward. There's no doubt that there'll be a time when this team needs to be able to rely on its kicking game in order to win a game.
The Ragin' Cajuns will have a bye coming up this week before playing in front of their home crowd at Cajun Field Wednesday, October 9th on ESPN 2 at 7 p.m.
