TIOGA, La. (AP) — The Rapides Parish School District will put a $300,000 state grant to work to improve literacy in six middle schools this year.

The Town Talk reports (http://townta.lk/12iLyn2 ) a team with the district wrote a grant application for part of the $4 million competitive Believe and Include grant initiative to serve students with disabilities.

State Superintendent of Education John White presented thee check to the district on Monday at Tioga Jr. High School -- one of the six schools participating in the grant.

Tioga Jr. High is partnering with Alexandria Middle Magnet, Arthur F. Smith Middle School, Pineville Junior High, Northwood High School and Caroline Dorman Junior High to increase literacy among middle school students who score below proficient on state exams through the Read and Achieve Program (RAP).
