On Wednesday, from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM, the Rayne Police Department conducted an educational and awareness campaign for seatbelt compliance.  Officers provided LifeSavers mints to drivers who were in compliance with adult and child seatbelt laws.  Officers warned drivers not in compliance with the law and provided them with literature that explained the reasons safety belt usage is so important.

Chief Stelly stated that “we hear many reasons why some people don’t want to wear a seatbelt, but unbuckled occupants cost Louisianans $1.6 Billion each year.  The law exists to save lives and reduce cost to society.”
Chief Stelly wants to remind everyone to buckle up.  He added “most accidents, 85% of which occur within 5 miles from home.  It saddens me to see someone injured or killed when a safety belt would have probably saved their life.”
In addition to the safety check point, the Rayne Police Department will be conducting overtime details where officers patrol the streets of Rayne looking for seatbelt violations.  This overtime is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Department of Highway Safety Commission.
