Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball coach Tony Robichaux officially announced today that sophomore right hander Chris Charpentier would be the opening night starter for the Cajuns Friday night at UT San Antonio.

"He's got experience, he's got pitchability," Robichaux said.  "Our guys like playing behind him because he attacks the strike zone."

This will be the Berwick native's second career start.  The 5-8 Charpentier was the winning pitcher in the NCAA regional elimination game against Jackson State.

Robichaux also said freshman right hander Evan Guillory would get the start Saturday afternoon, while senior Greg Milhorn would start Sunday's game.

"Guillory doesn't pitched scared," Robichaux said of the 6-3, 200lb. Jennings High School product.  "He doesn't just throw and hope.  He's got a quality fastball."

Milhorn might have been the Friday starter but suffered a setback when he came down with the flu.  Robichaux used Milhorn in a two inning intersquad game and pronounded him ready to go.

"We thought it was important for him to pitch in that intersquad," Robichaux said.  "He lost some weight when he came down with the flu."

Robichaux said he doesn't expect any of his starters to pitch deep into the game.  "Our guys need to learn how to manage a game.  You can pitch off the scouting report in the first three innings, but you need to learn how to reverse pitch after that."

Robichaux said his lineup would vary this weekend. "They (UTSA) are throwing two lefties and we have the ability to match up left/right with this team."  Robichaux said Greg Davis and Blake Trahan were entrenched at first base and shortstop, respectively, but the Cajuns had a lot of options at the other positions.

"We can play Brenn (Conrad) at second or third.  We can play (Kennon) Fontenot at second.  We're waiting for (Stefan) Trosclair to get cleared to throw."  Trosclair had surgery last summer to repair a torn labrum.  "Shug (Tyler Girouard), Joe Robbins and (Evan) Powell can all play third base.  We'll just see how the matchups work out."

UTSA will start right hander  Brock Hartson on Friday.  Lefties Nolan Trabanino and Cody Brannon will pitch Saturday and Sunday.

All three games can be heard on News/Talk 96.5 KPEL, with Dan McDonald calling the play by play.  Game times are 6pm Friday, 2pm Saturday and 1pm Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
