Screamin’ Eagles Soar Past Knights To Claim Share Of District 7-1A Title

Going into this season, we knew that District 7-1A had the chance to be more competitive than it had been the last few years, when Vermilion Catholic was winning district titles year after year.

But until you beat the champion, there's always that mentality that this year would be the same as last, especially with VC returning so many talented players off of last year's district championship squad.

After Ascension Episcopal defeated VC in week 6, it looked as if a new district champion would ascend to the throne. But, it turns out a longtime district rival helped to make sure that wouldn't happen.

Central Catholic of Morgan City, a team that has either challenged or tied with VC for numerous district titles over the last several years, defeated AES Friday night in convincing fashion, 46-22, while the Screamin' Eagles handled the Lafayette Christian Academy Knights 48-14, assuring a three-way tie between AES, CCMC and VC for the District 7-1A championship.

In VC's matchup with LCA, the Knights came out looking to take it to the Screamin' Eagles, driving deep into their territory. But VC's special teams came up with a huge field goal block as they kept LCA from capturing an early lead.

VC's offense responded with back-to-back touchdown tosses, as QB Hunter Frith found WR/RB/DB Devron Constantine in the front corner of the end zone with 1:52 left in the 1st Quarter, then found WR Payton Trahan in the same corner of the opposite end zone to open up the second quarter.

LCA would then respond with a 12-play, 96-yard drive, which would be capped off by a WR Bryce Badon touchdown catch from freshman QB Zach Clement to cut the lead to 14-7 with 3:56 left in the 2nd Quarter.

But, that's the closest the Knights would get as VC's WR/DB Tyler Derouen would reel off three touchdowns in three minutes as he made two touchdown catches sandwiched around a pick-6 to give the Screamin' Eagles a 34-7 halftime lead.

In the 2nd half, VC's freshman RB Kalix Broussard would add a rushing TD to their scoring total, while Constantine would get a pick-6 of his own to push their lead to 48-7 in the 4th Quarter.

LCA RB/DB Regan Miller's scoop and score for a touchdown on defense would provide the final margin.

Next up is the playoffs. It'll be fun to see where AES, CCMC and VC get seeded, as well as whether LCA makes it back after falling short on a technicality last season.
