LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPEL News) - A band of severe storms rolling through south Louisiana wreaked havoc along I-10, including causing an 18-wheeler to overturn on the I-10 bridge in Lake Charles.

The scary storms, which caused powerful winds and blinding rain along the interstate from Texas through Acadiana, appear to have caused several accidents throughout the region. Pictures emerged on social media of some of the chaos, including the overturned semi.

The I-10 bridge does not inspire confidence in drivers in the clearest of conditions, but in weather like this, the situation can turn dire in an instant. You can see that much below.

KATC meteorologist Rob Perillo noted just how intense some of those winds are.

"Doppler velocity data showing 100mph winds aloft near Sulphur," he wrote on Twitter. "That could mean 80mph winds on ground for the severe warned storm...quarter-golf ball size hail also possible."

Some images and video from Lake Charles via multiple sources show just how intense things were in the area on Monday afternoon and evening.

During severe storms in South Louisiana, drivers should prioritize safety. Stay informed about weather updates and heed warnings from local authorities. Plan your route carefully, opting for safer roads if travel is necessary. Ensure your vehicle is in good condition with working lights, brakes, and properly inflated tires.

There are several things you can do while you're on the road.

Drive slowly, allowing for slippery roads and reduced visibility. Increase following distance to accommodate sudden stops or maneuvers. Use headlights for better visibility, even during the day. Avoid flooded areas and never attempt to drive through standing water.

Be vigilant for fallen power lines and report them to authorities. Remain calm and focused on the road, avoiding distractions. Have an emergency kit in your vehicle with essentials like water, food, a flashlight, blankets, and a first aid kit.

If conditions worsen, pull over to a safe location and wait until it's safe to continue. Remember, safety should always come first when driving in severe weather.
