It's still the status quo for St. Landry Parish Council meetings when it comes to the use of cellphones.

The council decided last night to not take up a proposal to ban cellphone use at council meetings.

Councilwoman Pam Gautreau made a motion to table the introductory ordinance indefinitely until a meetings rules committee can discuss the issue.

Earlier in the meeting, council members voted to establish a meetings rule committee to handle such issues.

The vote was 6-5 in favor of tabling the cellphone issue.

The issue of whether or not council members should be allowed to have their cellphones at meetings was raised earlier this year at a Public Work and Finance Committee meeting by a councilman.

Councilman Wayne Ardoin says officials ask anyone attending the meeting to silence their phones, but it doesn’t always happen.

St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot said then, even if a measure like that would have passed, he had planned to veto the measure.
