HAHNVILLE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will consider permanently revoking the certificate of a Destrehan High School teacher who had sex with a 16-year-old student.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the board meets Aug. 11.

The teacher, Shelley Dufresne, forfeited her teaching certificate in an April 9 plea agreement that allowed her to avoid a trial and jail.

The board's policy is that teachers convicted of a felony will have their certificates revoked unless they can prove they were not convicted of the crime.

Dufresne was sentenced to 90 days in a mental health facility. If she fails to complete the mental health program by the end of August, she must report to the St. Charles Parish jail Sept. 1 to serve the remainder of her time.
