Struggle To Break Away From Pack In Louisiana’s Senate Race

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Contenders to be Louisiana's next U.S. senator are struggling to break away from the pack in a race where only a few percentage points could determine who reaches the runoff.

Twenty-four candidates are on Tuesday's ballot. Five are possible contenders to make the Dec. 10 runoff.

Among Republicans, U.S. Rep. Charles Boustany talks of "getting results" despite partisanship. U.S. Rep. John Fleming says he's the only true conservative among the major candidates. State Treasurer John Kennedy says Washington politicians have misspent taxpayer money, haven't listened to voter concerns and should be replaced.

Among Democrats, Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell talks of decades fighting for the working class. Lawyer Caroline Fayard, who has never held political office, positions herself as a fresh face for Congress, saying her competitors are career politicians.
