More money for river and port work here in Acadiana. The Army Corps of Engineers is spending $22 million on about a dozen rivers and ports.

Louisiana  Congressman and State leaders are seeking federal funding for dredging  operations on the Mississippi River.

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressmen Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-Southwest Louisiana) and Joe Courtney (D-Connecticut) today encouraged Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen to use all funds collected by the Harbor Maintenance Tax (HMT) for FY 2012 dredging of the nation’s ports, harbors and waterways.

River pilots and exporters are warning that the mouth of the Mississippi River is silting in, threatening a major commercial route, because there is not enough money to pay for dredges that normally keep the channel open.
