An issue has popped up at a Louisiana Walmart.

People are concerned about a sinkhole on Royal St. in the French Quarter, and for good reason. The Royal St. sinkhole seems to gradually be getting bigger.

BAYOU CORNE (AP) — Texas Brine Co. says it's repairing and raising a sunken section of levee along the southern side of a sinkhole in Ascension Parish, and will build another levee behind it.

The levee is meant to keep the salty, oily water in the sinkhole from getting into surrounding freshwater bayous and swamps.

Records show that Texas Brine Co. has developed a backup plan to replace the cracked southern section of a protective levee surrounding the sinkhole in northern Assumption Parish and may look to reroute Bayou Corne if conditions deteriorate further.

Texas Brine documents filed with the state don't suggest the sinkhole will reach either. But they say it is edging closer to the southern levee just north of Bayou Corne.

The salt dome cavern collapsed last year, and a massive sinkhole has developed in that area.

The sinkhole in Assumption Parish is bigger today after swallowing more trees overnight Friday. The parish's Emergency Preparedness Director John Boudreaux says about a dozen trees on a patch of land roughly 50 feet by 75 feet was consumed on the north side of the sinkhole...

The formation of the sinkhole came about when an underground salt cavern collapsed.

Parish officials say that the collapse, or "slough in," happened around 5:30pm followed a periodic series of underground tremors and "burps" of gas and debris earlier

The sinkhole is in the middle of the villa and is about 40 to 50 feet in diameter.

While there have been incidents with sinkholes swallowing a car or even a house, the unfortunate town of Bayou Corne in Louisiana is vanishing.
