LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) — A suburban Denver community is in mourning after learning of the death of a high school student who was shot in the head by a classmate just over a week ago.

Hospital officials say 17-year-old Claire Davis died Saturday afternoon. The hospital says despite her "fighting spirit," Davis' injuries were "too severe" for her to overcome.

Davis' family is remembering her "grace, laughter and light." In a statement, they describe themselves as grateful for the 17 years they had with her.

Davis was shot by Karl Pierson on Dec. 13 at Arapahoe High School in Centennial. Pierson killed himself moments later. The Arapahoe County sheriff says the 18-year-old Pierson was likely targeting a librarian who had disciplined him when he entered the school with a shotgun, a machete and three Molotov cocktails on Dec. 13. He says Pierson appeared to shoot Davis at random before killing himself moments later.
