Sad news out of Jefferson Parish as two toddler girls drowned on Sunday, June 16 in a community swimming pool at a Metairie apartment complex.

According to authorities, the tragedy happened in a swimming pool at the Lemon Tree Apartments in the 4900 block of Zenith Street around 10:00 am.

First responders received a call about the unresponsive children shortly before 9:55 am. Initial reports indicated that the pair of two-year-olds had fallen in or jumped into the pool.

Once on scene, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputies began CPR efforts. Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after that and they continued treatment.

JPSO deputies formed a rolling blockade of intersections from the apartment complex to Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson to help accelerate the quick and safe transport of the children.

They arrived at the hospital at 10:24 am. But there was no indication from authorities if the children ever regained consciousness.

The identities of the children have not been made public.

“Our initial investigation indicates that the victims were outside their apartment unit playing with siblings, before entering the gated common pool area,” JPSO spokesman Sgt. Brandon Veal said in a statement. “This investigation is in its early stages. The identity of the victims is being withheld at this time.”

The investigation remains ongoing.
