Year’s Second Louisiana West Nile Death Reported
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana health officials are reporting the state's second West Nile Virus death of 2014.
The state doesn't give details on the identity of the victim. Friday's news release says only that the victim was more than 75 years old.
The health department says 29 cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been reported in the state this year, including 14 new cases reported this week. Seven of the new cases involve serious "neuroinvasive" infections: three in Caddo Parish, two in East Baton Rouge, and one each in Ascension and Livingston parishes.
There were five new cases of the less serious West Nile fever: three in Caddo and one each in Bossier and Tangipahoa. Two people were infected but showed no symptoms. Such cases are usually discovered through medical tests.
