Youngsville Girl To Represent Acadiana At National Spelling Bee

A young woman from Youngsville is in Washington D.C. this week to represent Acadiana at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Alyssa Walker, who attends Acadiana Renaissance Charter Academy, won the eight parish area competition to become Speller # 198 in the national competition.

The 14-year-old joins five other students from Louisiana looking to win the top prize at the 92nd annual Scripps Spelling Bee.

Some 11 million students competed across the nation, but now 565 are left to compete against one another to win the first place prize of $50,000.

The other five Louisiana contestants are:

• Bre'Ann Washington (Age 14, Grade 8)
  Monroe, Louisiana- Robert E. Lee Junior High School
• Cal Alexander (Age 14, Grade 8)
  Shreveport, Louisiana- Caddo Middle Magnet School
• Zaila Avant-garde (Age 12, Grade 6)
  New Orleans, Louisiana- Clover Lane Home School
• Isaac Phillips (Age 13, Grade 7)
  Ponchatoula, Louisiana- Ponchatoula Junior High School
