Inmate Discovered Dead At Iberia Parish Jail

Police and officials in Iberia Parish are investigating the death of an inmate at the parish's jail.

According to sheriff's office spokesperson Lt. Richard Fleming, the inmate was discovered unresponsive in a cell at about 11:10 p.m. Saturday. Fleming said medics from Acadian Ambulance were immediately contacted, and deputies began life-saving procedures.

The inmate was declared dead by the coroner's office at 11:55 p.m.

An official cause of death is pending an autopsy, Fleming said, and the name of the inmate is being withheld until family can be notified.
