LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) — The City-Parish Council has approved an ordinance allowing Lafayette Consolidated Government to purchase the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Horse Farm to convert into a public park.

The council approved the final ordinance Tuesday allowing the issuance of certificates of indebtedness to spend up to $6 million on the purchase with a 7-2 vote.

City-Parish President Joey Durel tells The Advertiser that university officials and government leaders will now finalize a deal transferring ownership from the university to the city.

Durel, who has been a major supporter of the project, said he expects that deal to be finalized by early May and said the park will take shape within three years.
