BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) — Missouri has executed an inmate who raped and killed a college student in 1995.

Forty-three-year-old Michael Worthington was the first U.S. prisoner put to death since an Arizona lethal injection went awry last month.

Worthington was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

In an interview with The Associated Press just hours before the lethal injection, Worthington said, "I figure I'll wake up in a better place tomorrow."
