A New Orleans police sergeant who admitted lying to the FBI in its probe of a deadly police shooting after Hurricane Katrina has resigned.

A police department spokeswoman told The Times-Picayune that Sgt. Ronald Ruiz Jr. resigned Dec. 31 after 12 years on the force.

Ruiz was a government witness during the trial for five current or former officers who were charged in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old Henry Glover and in an alleged cover-up. Three of the defendants were convicted.

Ruiz testified that he initially lied to the FBI about what he saw at a school where Glover was driven after the shooting.
