Publication of ABiz, the groups business publications, as well as, Current--an arts/culture magazine--will also be suspended late this summer.

Publishing group administrators are exploring the possibilities of an online-only news product, potentially doing so as a nonprofit journalism organization.

Through IND Media's daily newsletter, The Independent's Co-Publisher Cherry Fisher May said:

“The media landscape everywhere is being redefined. We are certainly not immune to those challenges. Our staff is among the best in the business, and we’re immensely proud of the work they do,” Fisher May said. “We also appreciate the tens of thousands of readers and loyal advertisers who have supported our mission. It’s time to close this chapter in our long publishing career while we explore potential options for our future.”

Through social media, and the like, management will continue to cover major stories including Lafayette City Marshall Brian Pope's criminal trial, and a public records suit against Lousiiana 3rd Circuit Judge Candyce Perret that began during the heated judge's race earlier this year.

The Independent was founded in 2003 as Acadiana's alternative newspaper. The weekly print publication came to an end earlier this year, when the staff created an exclusively online presence with Theind.com.]
