Lafayette firefighters are trying to determine what caused a major fire, damaging 19 storage units at Life Storage on 2860 NE Evangeline Thruway on Thursday evening.

Witnesses told firefighters that they were placing items in a nearby unit when they noticed smoke coming from the row of storage units, with flames coming out of one of the units. According to the press release from the Lafayette Fire Department, the witnesses tried to put the fire out with a fire extinguisher but the door was locked.

In all, 19 storage units sustained heavy fire damage as emergency crews containing 53 firefighters and 10 fire apparatus were on scene for four hours.
