NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a 21-year-old man has been booked with first-degree murder of his 2-month-old daughter.

Officer Garry Flot says Micah Short had been jailed Monday, the day the baby died. On Tuesday, an autopsy classified her death as homicide by blunt force trauma to her head.

Flot says Short was booked Monday on charges dating back to March — cruelty to the baby and domestic abuse battery of his wife. He says the couple told doctors that Short had tripped while carrying the baby and her head hit her crib. But Flot says that during questioning, Short admitted that he had hit the baby because she was crying.

Flot did not know whether Short has an attorney.
