Shreveport State Rep Announces Run for Senate
Shreveport state representative Alan Seabaugh is making a run for state senate. The Conservative Republican has served in the Louisiana House since 2010 but he is term limited. He says he had always planned to run for the Senate. But now that lawmakers have redrawn the districts and cut the seat Barrow Peacock holds, Seabaugh will be running for the newly drawn District 31 seat which covers 10 parishes across northwest Louisiana.
Natchitoches Republican Senator Louie Bernard has decided he is not seeking re-election after serving one term.
Seabaugh tells KEEL News he has family in the district and he understands the needs of our region. He says his top priority will be to address crime across our region. He says that's a problem in every community. Seabaugh did say he will not support any measures that would restrict guns. He says the effort by the Caddo Commission to limit the amount of ammo you can have in a gun while driving is not legal. He says state law pre-empts local laws on guns.
Seabaugh also says he knows the ins and outs of getting legislation passed. he knows how to build coalitions to push ideas forward.
The Shreveport lawmaker is holding a fundraiser in Baton Rouge this week and then he will hit the ground running. He does expect other candidates to jump into the race, but so far, no one else has officially announced.
This new Senate seat stretches into southeast Shreveport and south Bossier City.
Seabaugh says he is endorsed by Republican Congressman Mike Johnson of Benton and Republican Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry.
