Attorney General Jeff Landry Encourages Citizens To Know Their Housing Rights
BATON ROUGE, LA – While some flood victims look for places to rent as their homes get repaired, Attorney General Jeff Landry is educating owners and renters about their rights and responsibilities under the Fair Housing Act.
“Fair housing should never be denied to any person because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or handicap,” said General Landry. “My Office will enforce the Louisiana Equal Housing Opportunity Act; and if someone is being scammed, we will work to get justice.”
General Landry said it is illegal to threaten, coerce, intimidate, or interfere with anyone exercising a fair housing right or assisting others who exercise that right. It is also illegal for anyone to advertise or make any statement that indicates a limitation or preference based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap. This applies to single-family and owner-occupied housing that are otherwise exempt from the Act.
General Landry also offered the following signs of possible discrimination:
- Declining to sell or rent available housing
- Requiring different terms, conditions, or privileges for sale or rental of a dwelling
- Denying access or membership to a facility or service related to the sale or rental of housing
- Advertising “no kids” or “adults only” in listings for sale or rent
- Refusing to make reasonable accommodations or allow modifications to make the dwelling accessible for a person with a disability
Attorney General Jeff Landry’s Equal Housing Opportunity Section is available to provide training to businesses, professional associations, builders, developers, owners, and renters working to comply with the law.
