There was a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle very early Friday morning, and according to officials with Louisiana State Police, a bicyclist died at the scene.

After viewing social media and local news outlets information of the crash, the family of 45-year-old Paul Anthony Provost, identified him as the victim.

Louisiana State Police Troop I Spokesman Trooper Thomas Gossen says that at around one o'clock Friday morning, a vehicle was traveling down Louisiana Highway 14 and struck a bicycle that was bicycling in the middle of the same lane as the vehicle.

Gossen says that the crash was on Highway 14 near Louisiana Highway 676 in Iberia Parish.

The trooper says that Provost's bicycle did not have the bicycle equipped with lights, and that the driver was not able to see the bicycle in the middle of the roadway.

When the driver of the vehicle hit the bicyclist, he was thrown from it, and Provost was pronounced dead at the scene by officials with the Iberia Parish Coroner's Office.

Routine toxicology tests are pending at this time, and as more details become available, Gossen says that he will share it with the public. It's an ongoing investigation.

The woman operating the vehicle was asked to take a breath test, and Gossen says that they determined that there was no alcohol present.

Trooper Thomas Gossen wants to remind people who ride bicycles that there are some safety things they can do that will help in having a careful ride. He suggests that you have reflective items on your bicycle, your clothes, and he suggests that understand all the laws on the books. He also suggests that motorists understand these laws also.

The trooper says that thirty-four people have died in our area since the start of this year.
