The waters of the Mississippi River continue to rise and the Army Corps of Engineers began the opening of the Bonnet Carre spillway this morning as a way to alleviate ever rising waters.

The Army Corps is hoping to reduce the chances for flooding in areas where there are more homes and businesses.   Later on this week it is expected that the Army Corps of Engineers will get permission to open the Morganza spillway.

Iberia, St. Mary, St. Martin and St. Landry parishes in Acadiana have reminded their citizens of the potential for flooding due to waters moving south.  People in the expected inundation areas have been asked to voluntarily evacuate.    Those include residents along the Stephenville-Belle River area in St. Landry Parish. That river will be impacted by the Mississippi and the Atchafalaya River.
