Cajuns Don’t Do The Little Things And Lose Another Close One
Game two of the opening weekend baseball series for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns against the Texas Longhorns.
Brandon Young, the Junior College transfer from Howard JC, got the start and ran into trouble in the top of the second inning when he walked the opposing catcher Michael McCann with two outs. Young then surrendered a double to score McCann and then the floodgates opened with four straight hits that led to four runs. The second run was aided by a Brennan Breaux three-base error on a single that allowed Bryce Reagan to round the bases for a little league home run. 5-0 Texas.
However, in the bottom of the inning, the Cajuns showed their mettle by coming back with four runs of their own on five hits. The big hits came from Orynn Veillon with an RBI double, Todd Lott knocked through an RBI hit, and Daniel Lahare plated the other two with a bases-loaded single. 5-4 Longhorns.
In the third inning sophomore, Brock Batty took over for Young who threw 51 pitches. Batty got into some hot water loading the bases with an error by O'Neal Lochridge and two walks but he stepped up in the biggest moment striking out leadoff hitter Duke Ellis to hold the game at 5-4.
Freshman Connor Cook entered the game for his first collegiate action in the sixth and had a clean inning. In the seventh, he wasn't as lucky as third baseman Ryan Reynolds clubbed a solo home run off him to begin the inning and just like that it was 6-4.
Again, the Cajuns fought back in the ninth as Lahare got things going with a double and advanced to third on an error by the right fielder Austin Todd. Hunter Kasuls hit a sacrifice fly to score him to make it 6-5 but that's as close as they would get as they suffered their second straight setback.
With the loss, Louisiana falls to 0-2 on the year. Brandon Young was saddled with the loss (0-1) while Cole Quintanilla picked up the victory for Texas (1-0).
These two teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Russo Park.
