Cajuns Take Down Lions, End Streak To SLU With Solid Win
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun (18-6) baseball team boarded a bus to Hammond Tuesday afternoon. Now, they're boarding a bus back to Lafayette with a 9-6 victory in hand, snapping a 9-game losing streak to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (18-8).
Offensively, the Cajuns got plenty of contributions. Louisiana finished with 10 hits, as a trio of Cajuns got two hits apiece. Dex Kjerstad (who also made an incredible grab on defense in RF) finished with two hits, as did Nick Thurman. Tyler Girouard also finished with two hits, stretching his hitting streak to nine games. Caleb Adams led the squad in RBI with 3.
Chase Traffic (3-1) earned the win for Louisiana, giving the Cajuns 5.1 innings of solid work. While he allowed the leadoff hitter on in the first three innings (SLU got one run in each of the first three innings), he settled down, allowing only 5 hits and 4 earned runs during his time on the rubber.
“We slowed it down after the third and went back to just playing baseball,” said UL head coach Tony Robichaux. "When you do that to a team that plays small ball, you can usually win.”
Matt Hicks came out of the pen early, replacing Traffic in the sixth with two outs.
“He was sick this weekend, so he wanted some extra work anyway," explained Robichaux.
He got extra work, and worked the plate well. In 3.2 innings of work, Hicks allowed only 3 hits and 1 run.
Louisiana is now halfway through their seven-game road swing. They'll hit the road for Bowling Green this Easter weekend, battling WKU in a three-game SBC series. First-pitch on Friday is set for 6:00.
