The 917th Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command will be deactivated Jan. 8, according to the Shreveport Times newspaper. Since the 1970s, the 917th Wing has operated airplanes on the southern end of the sprawling bomber base.

The unit will be replaced by the 307th Bomb Wing, which operates the B-52H Stratofortress. The new unit will include the 93rd Bomb Squadron and the 907th Maintenance Group. The 93rd Bomb Squadron trains B-52 aircrew to employ the B-52 in combat.
