“Dead Zone” Not Expanding As Much As Thought
Researchers say the low oxygen area in the Gulf of Mexico called the "dead zone" hasn't expanded as much as expected. Scientists had expected the area to cover around 8,500 square miles due to record
flooding from the Mississippi River. The zone measured 6,765 square miles in July, still more than a thousand square miles larger than average.
