A plan that has long been in place to put LSU on track to become less state-controlled will be advanced next year by a group known as Louisiana Flagship Coalition. Sean Reilly will co-chair the group and says the groups goal is to remove "bureaucratic shackles" off the flagship university so that it can be managed more effectively. The board will be meeting with the governor this week to discuss its
very specific plans. Reilly says if they do this right then LSU will rely less on state general funds and more on self generated funds. Reilly says the group is trying to make LSU Flagship Institution look more like its peer institutions from around the country. Reilly says the greater ability to raise tuition and fees would make the most difference for the campus. He says the increases wouldn't make tuition unaffordable for most because 90% of incoming freshman are on TOPS and only they only pay about $900 to attend LSU.
