Today, we say "happy birthday" to the Superdome!

Actually, the birthday isn't officially until Saturday, but the beginning of the month is a good time to reminisce.

The home of the New Orleans Saints was dedicated on August 3, 1975.

Yes, the Superdome, believe it or not, is (will be) 44-years old.

Plans were actually drawn up in 1967 by the New Orleans modernist architectural firm of Curtis and Davis, before the building opened as the Louisiana Superdome on August 3, 1975.

The Superdome held its official dedication ceremonies on August 3, 1975, with jazz musicians Al Hurt and Pete Fountain playing for the event.

The building, which carried a $134 million (that would equate to right about $600 million today) price tag, continued its grand opening. from August 28-September 14.

The Saints fell to the Cincinnati Bengals, 21-0, in their 1975 season opener, the first regular season game played at the Superdome.

Known as the Mercedes-Benz Superdome since 2011, the building has hosted seven Super Bowls, four BCS National Championship games, and five Final Fours, while also serving as the site of the Muhammad Ali/Leon Spinks rematch in 1978, the 1988 Republican National Convention, as well as WrestleMania XXX  in 2014 and WrestleMania XXXIV this year.

So many memorable moments have transpired over the last 44 years at 1500 Sugar Bowl Drive.

Happy birthday old friend!
