House To Consider Restrictions On Traffic Cameras
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana House will debate a proposal to place new limits on automated speed enforcement systems that towns and cities use to issue traffic tickets.
The bill is part of an annual effort by New Orleans Rep. Jeff Arnold to chip away at traffic cameras. Arnold says the systems are unfair to citizens and have little to do with public safety.
Mayors and police chiefs in places that use the cameras defend them as reducing car accidents while allowing police officers to focus on crime rather than traffic tickets.
Arnold's bill targets speed cameras on state highways. On those roads, tickets could only be sent if a driver exceeded the speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.
The House Transportation Committee advanced the proposal with an 8-7 vote.
