Deputies in Iberia Parish will begin taking steps to increase police presence on the streets of the parish following incidents in which deputies were personally attacked.

"The incidents have been mainly occurring on Sunday evenings," according to Capt. Ryan Turner with the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office. Most of the incidents involve alcohol and usually start as domestic disturbances, Turner says.

In the most recent incident, Turner says deputies were dispatched to a fight, but they were surrounded by an armed "riotous" group. A police unit was vandalized during the incident. Eight people were arrested.

"I will not lose the streets to individuals who cannot congregate without trying to shoot one another or beat each other up," Sheriff Louis Ackal says.
