Coffee is an important part of life in Louisiana. It's in our heritage. Since the port of New Orleans was one of the most instrumental ports in bringing in products from South America and Africa through the years the port grew famous for its coffee.

Many of the coffee beans used to make our favorite Louisiana brews have to be shipped in and processed here before we can have a sip or two and suddenly become able to take on the problems of those around us.

That's why when there is any product recall affecting coffee and coffee products we usually pay attention. The coffee recall announced in the past few days by the United States Food and Drug Administration is one you'll want to pay attention to.

The size and scope of this coffee recall cover the entire United States and deals exclusively with products manufactured by Snapchill LLC of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The recall is so extensive that it affects some 242 different canned coffee products produced by Snapchill LLC. The 242 different products are sold nationwide under 128 different brand names.

The concern with the products is botulism. Yeah, the same stuff that makes Hollywood actors and country stars of a certain age always look surprised can kill you. You knew that Botox was a form of botulism, right? I can see why they don't publicize that fact. Who would want to look younger by smearing food poisoning all over their face? But we digress.

The concern over botulism, which can be fatal in extreme cases, is very real and the company, Snapchill LLC is doing what they can to remove potentially contaminated products from store shelves.

How Do You Know If You've Got Bad Products?

The coffee drinks in question are sold under a variety of names. You can see the entire list here. You should also know that the drinks are packaged and sold in a variety of metal can sizes ranging from 7 ounces to 12 ounces. And despite the brand labeling each product will have the words "Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC" underneath the nutrition facts. You might also see the words "Snapchill Coffee" on the label.

If you have some of the recalled product in your home you're encouraged to discard it. Just make sure you take a picture of the product before you do.  You may reach out to Snapchill or the point of purchase for a refund. As of now, no illnesses have been reported and the recall is being executed out of an abundance of caution for consumer protection.
